There are many people living in the world and each individual is different from the rest. We form groups that share rules and customs that are different from those of other groups. It is interesting to learn how people live in different parts of the world. However, throughout history, there have always been people who did not like that at all and felt that their way of living and being was the best and should be the only one. This has led to events and situations such as the Holocaust and apartheid and the emergence of groups such as the Ku Klux Klan. In this Teaching Sequence we analyse what happens when a group of people assaults another group, the arguments wielded and how we can promote respectful coexistence with the rights of all individuals. |
ELIMINATING THE DIFFERENCEThroughout history, the cases in which a group of people, identified as such, has been assaulted by another group have multiplied. And why? This is what we are going to work on in this task. We are going to focus on three cases that had one thing in common: the persecution and cruel removal of individuals. In the three topics that we propose, the common link is that a group of people were persecuted and attacked for their race, culture or religion. While the attacking group expressed reasons to justify the aggressions, the real motives were hatred, fear and ignorance. To perform this task, get into groups of 5 and collect the information available in the Resources section. When you have selected the information, you can put it in a digital poster that illustrates what you consider most relevant. In the Resources section, you can find the application to make the poster. Not all groups work with the same event, so you should keep in mind that the poster that you design should help the other students learn more about your topic. The following questions can guide you in the search for information: What is it? Where and when did it occur? Who were the attacking group? Who did they attack? What reasons did they wield for doing so? What was the form of the attack? In groups, choose one of the topics listed below:
Duration: 1 hour THE SCAPEGOATA scapegoat is defined in the Oxford Dictionary as "a person who is blamed for the wrongdoings, mistakes, or faults of others." In the comic "The New Neighbours", you will find a situation in which someone is unfairly blamed. This task consists of searching in its pages for the moment when this occurs. Pay attention to who is blamed, why and what happens as a result of this. How do you think that things would have gone if they had not found the scapegoat? In groups of 5, write a list of attitudes and behaviours that you consider most suitable in preventing such situations. Then, invent a new outcome that reflects the attitudes and behaviours in your list. Set down the new outcome in an online comic. In the Resources section there is a link to a comic called The New Neighbours, as well as a cloud application to make yours. Duration: 2 hours WHAT HAPPENS TODAY?After looking at important historical events in the last century, during which there were extremely harsh attacks on certain racial, religious and cultural groups, let's take a look at the current situation in Europe regarding such attitudes and racist and xenophobic behaviours. To perform this task, get together in groups of 5 and select one of the European countries that we propose. In the Resources section you can find information to help you better understand the current situation. You may have to put key information in an infographic. In the Resources section you can find the necessary information to carry out the task. These are the countries you can choose from:
